DOT issues guidelines for electronic gadgets in cars

Motorists in California are likely familiar with the state's laws regarding distracted driving. The California Highway Patrol has increased their efforts to prevent this hazardous behavior during April, as the month was designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Transportation has issued new voluntary guidelines for automakers with the goal of decreasing the number of motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted drivers.

Jury sides with family in wrongful death suit in California

Whenever a person is killed, the person's family suffers from the hole that is left after the loss. If the death was an accident that may have been prevented, the anguish becomes even stronger for the family members and friends of the person who died. Family members may deal with pain and suffering for years after the sudden death of a person, and may feel that those who were involved in the death should be held responsible. In California, many families will choose to file a civil suit if criminal charges are not filed after a death.

Despite claims from the company who hired the caregivers of a young schizophrenic woman, a jury recently awarded her parents $7.7 million, suggesting they felt the company was responsible for the death. The attorney for the parents has claimed that the woman died from being restrained on the bed after becoming angry at the caregivers; the company claims that she died from stress and from her medications.

Truck driver loses consciousness and kills 2 in California

Accidents that involve large trucks are often very destructive and may involve serious injuries and even death for the truck driver, but especially for those traveling in smaller cars. Trucking accidents that occur on the highways and freeways in California are even more dangerous, as they may involve more cars. Truck drivers should always be alert and aware of the situation they are in when driving a large truck on a busy road.

Witnesses of a truck accident that killed two people and put two others in the hospital with moderate injuries claim the driver of the truck said he lost consciousness after choking on a piece of food while driving. The truck crossed both sides of the interstate, hitting three cars in the process. No citation was issued to the driver, although the accident is still under investigation.

Motorcycle accident results in father's death in Carmichael

A motorcycle accident may often end in serious injuries, and in the most tragic of times, may cause the death of the driver or passengers of the motorcycle. Injuries from motorcycle accidents can be extensive, and may result in high medical bills. At times, injuries from a motorcycle accident in California may affect the injured person's ability to work, and they may face a loss in wages or earnings because of the injury. Family members are likely to suffer the most when a motorcycle accident is fatal.

A cause had not been determined in an accident involving a motorcycle and a minivan that happened in Carmichael recently. The driver of the minivan did not need medical treatment but the passenger on the motorcycle, a 16-year-old, was reported to have major injuries. The motorcyclist, who was the teen's father, died at the scene. The father and his son were ejected from the motorcycle after it hit the front of the van; the van was attempting to turn left at the time and appears to have pulled out in front of the bike.

Steel beam accident causes injuries on construction site

Construction sites can be one of the most dangerous places to work, and construction workers place themselves in danger every day when they go to work. A construction accident can causes injuries that are physically disabling to the worker. Emotional damage and posttraumatic stress disorder may also be concerns after a construction worker is injured in an accident on the job, particularly in falling accidents that occur from large heights.

Construction crews received a safety reminder when a worker moving with a steel beam was injured on the job. Fire crews used new, advanced equipment to quickly rescue the man after he slipped and fell from a platform. The man was working on the construction of a chiller plant at a local medical center. Several roads were closed as the construction worker was evacuated from the scene.

Family suspects vehicle malfunction in fatal Sacramento accident

The loss of a loved one can be devastating, and may be even more painful if the loss could have been prevented or was caused by the negligent acts of another person or company error. When a wrongful death occurs, families may choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the responsible party for the pain and suffering they have endured and any medical expenses that were incurred in trying to save the life of the family member.

After a woman's death in the Sacramento River recently, questions are rising over whether her car was functioning properly at the time. While the California Highway Patrol has not made any public announcement about what caused the fatal accident, the woman's family suspects that one of the car's systems may have failed, causing the vehicle to leave the road and crash into the river after driving through trees and a grassy embankment.

Wrecked car on freeway in Whittier causes deaths of 2 men

A wide range of injuries may occur when a person is involved in a freeway car accident in California. Broken bones, spinal injuries, and even death can be the result of irresponsible driving or poor decision making by drivers in car accidents. Car repairs or replacements are another casualty from most car accidents. In one split second, the decisions of a driver may affect the lives of many others on the road, and many teenage drivers especially lack the experience and knowledge necessary to lessen the deadly effects of a freeway car accident.

Recently, on a dark freeway in the early hours of the morning, two men were killed after their vehicles collided with a previously wrecked car that was left sitting there. The abandoned car caused four accidents in all; one driver crashed his vehicle while trying to avoid an accident.

4 people treated at hospital after accident near Paso Robles

Commercial vehicle accidents are often more serious and tragic than those involving smaller vehicles in California. In these trucking accidents, when fault lies with the driver of the commercial vehicle, the employer of the driver may be held responsible, which means that injured victims can pursue them in a court of law for financial compensation. Even if serious injuries are not immediately reported, it is a good idea for people involved in a truck accident to be examined by a medical professional.

Four people received treatment at a nearby hospital after suffering minor injuries in a multiple vehicle car accident. The details are sketchy but apparently, the driver of a concrete pump truck failed to notice that the semi in front of him had either slowed down or stopped. As a result the semi likely rolled into the car in front of it, causing a small chain reaction. It is unknown whether the people who were injured were drivers or passengers of the three cars involved. It is also unknown whether the driver of the concrete pump truck was cited for causing the accident.

Why do we call them 'car accidents' when most are preventable?

We often write about the causes of car accidents, but have never really stopped to focus on the term itself. Should a vehicle crash always be called an accident? After all, car accidents are sometimes the unavoidable and unpredictable result of circumstance.

But what about crashes caused by distracted driving or drunk driving? These can hardly be called accidents because they are known risks and completely avoidable. In fact, you might say that these driving behaviors are car accidents waiting to happen.

Red-light camera controversy heats up

California motorists are voicing their displeasure about red-light cameras in increasing numbers. These devices have been installed at intersections in Sacramento and across the Golden State in an effort to reduce the rate of preventable car accidents. The logic behind red-light cameras is that if drivers understand that they may be fined for running red lights, they will stop themselves from doing so.

However, California motorists are being charged prohibitively large fines for red-light offenses caught on camera. Some are incurring fines of almost $500 for each offense. True, running red lights is a practice best avoided. However, yellow lights are timed differently across the state. For those drivers who are anticipating an average-length yellow light and are "caught" running red when the yellow disappears with unanticipated speed, red-light cameras can be a frustrating and expensive nuisance.
